About Rainbow and Brown Trout in Missouri

Missouri offers trout fishing at Lake Taneycomo and four trout parks in the state. Hatcheries found at Lake Taneycomo and the trout parks allow easy stocking of both rainbow and brown trout. Trout are released into Lake Taneycomo and trout park waters once they reach a certain length. More rainbow trout are released than brown trout, which accounts for the larger number of rainbows caught.

Seasonal patterns differ little for trout in Missouri. Trout spend their time in the currents and eddies of streams waiting for food from upstream. Structures such as trees, logs, and rocks provide trout with ambush points for baits. When fishing, check out these areas.

Patterns used for catching trout is much the same year around. Subtle changes in presentation or technique can be effective. The four trout parks – Meramec Springs, Montauk, Bennett Springs, and Roaring River – are open for eight months, while Lake Taneycomo is open all year. (The trout parks are open during the winter for catch and release fishing) At Lake Taneycomo, anglers can use boats to fish from. Water released from below Table Rock Dam creates a current that improves fishing.

Other areas to catch trout are the Trophy Trout and Wild Trout Management areas near the trout parks. The regulations for catching and keeping trout in these areas differ from the trout parks and Lake Taneycomo. Before fishing any of these areas, be sure to check the latest Missouri fishing regulations for rules.

Since most people use light spinning tackle for trout fishing, try a flyrod to add a new dimension to your fishing appreciation. Though a little tricky to master, fly fishing is a unique experience. To learn to use a flyrod, ask someone who fly fishes to teach you, or attend a fly fishing seminar.
