Lake Taneycomo, located in the very southern part of Missouri, is a very unique lake. Though the lake was created with the completion of Powersite Dam in 1913, the Trout that are now available, were not introduced until after the completion of Table Rock Dam in the 1950’s. Though black bass, bluegill, and other fish can still be found in Lake Taneycomo, the cold temperature of the lake makes it more suitable for trout. The cold water that feeds Lake Taneycomo comes from water released from the depths of Table Rock Lake.
Part of the White River, and 22 miles long, Lake Taneycomo looks more like a river than a lake. Depending on the time of year, the water in Lake Taneycomo can be calm, or have a current of varying speeds. If water from Table Rock Lake needs to be released for flood control or power generation, Lake Taneycomo can flow like a river. (The trout actually bite better when the water is moving.)
Lake Taneycomo and nearby Branson offer resort and camping accommodations, music shows, water parks, shopping malls, restaurants, and other forms of family recreational facilities and entertainment. Though there are stretches of the lake with resorts that have their own boat ramps and docks, there are public boat ramps located along the lake.
For the most part, Lake Taneycomo is void of standing timber, but a hard bottom, large rocks, sunken trees, stumps, deep holes, and eddies provide structure for the trout. The lower part of the lake offers wide areas where anglers can troll for trout. Stocked by the Missouri Department of Conservation, rainbow and brown trout are available in Lake Taneycomo. Trout can be caught all year around since the lake does not freeze over. Just bundle up in the winter. Also, different from the Trout Parks in Missouri, a Trout Stamp is required to take trout from Lake Taneycomo.
Tip: If wind creates ripples on the surface, suspend a tiny jig from a float. The motion of the ripples will make the jig dance, like the shrimp native to the lake.
